TNT Express will today hold the finals of its annual ‘Drive Me Challenge’ eco-driving competition in Duiven, the Netherlands. The Drive Me Challenge encourages safe and fuel-efficient driving practices among TNT Express drivers. For the first time in its 7-year history, the competition will test the skills of both forklift and delivery drivers.

The best TNT Express drivers from thirteen countries have prepared for the event for months. The Drive Me Challenge simulates a typical day on the job. This involves collecting and delivering parcels on time and in perfect condition, regardless of traffic conditions.

The Challenge will kick off with a Le Mans start. At the sound of the claxon, each team of driver and co-driver will run to their van. Before they start, a forklift driver will load a pallet with a bucket of water into the vehicle. Each team scores points for speed and the amount of water remaining after the drive. After completion of three laps over a total distance of 31 km (20 miles), each team is evaluated on four criteria: road safety and health, customer experience, fuel efficiency and speed.

Bas Janssen, Managing Director Express Road Network: "The Drive Me Challenge allows drivers to measure themselves against colleagues from other countries and to become ambassadors of good driving. The event has proved a popular way to support our fuel efficiency efforts. The Challenge is closely linked to our real life experience of delivering express shipments on time, in a sustainable, safe and customer-friendly way."

In recognition of their critical role, this year’s Drive Me Challenge includes a competition for forklift drivers. This profession demands the speed of a sprinter combined with the precision of a watchmaker. Each driver will be required to complete three exercises: one with transport boxes/cages, another with pallets and a third with a long load. All drivers must also complete a health and safety survey.

The Drive Me Challenge is organised with Fleet Forum, TNT Express’ partner in improving driver health, fuel efficiency and safety. Opel provides the 15 Opel Movano Vans that will be used during the Challenge. Toyota provides 6 forklift trucks. Lysanda provides the onboard telematics to analyse the driver’s fuel efficiency.
