Corporate Responsibility

At TNT, we have a long-standing commitment to protecting the environment, promoting safety and health and to conducting our operations with integrity and with respect for the interests of all our stakeholders.

Corporate Responsibility is integrated in our Outlook strategy throughout two strategic priorities: increase efficiency and productivity, and prioritise Health & Safety practices.

Our Commitment

  • Focus constantly on improving our performance in the areas of Health & Safety and Environment (HSE).
  • Manage and measure our performance in HSE via integrated reporting and by complying with global certification standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001).
  • Help our customers to reach their business objectives in a sustainable and responsible way.

Health & Safety

  • Invest in healthy and safe working conditions for The People Network.
  • Exceed our Health & Safety obligations at all times and on every delivery.
  • Continuously improve in road safety with a focus on vehicle, driver, and journey, in addition to subcontractor management.

Environment

  • Reduce our consumption of energy and natural resources, and decrease our emissions.
  • Improve our carbon efficiency by using the latest fuel efficient technology, and by leveraging our drivers’ safe and energy-efficient driving skills.
  • Continuously optimise our routes and networks.

  • CR performance management

TNT CR performance is measured on a continuous basis according to TNT business standards, performance indicators and three internationally recognised standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001).

    Governance

The Executive Board is the owner of the CR agenda. A central CR Steering Committee advises and assists the Executive Board in developing, executing and monitoring the performance of TNT’s CR strategy and its associated policies and procedures. The committee is chaired by the CEO and comprises relevant functional directors.

The corporate CR department supports the committee and coordinates global CR activities and performance. Annually, the Supervisory Board evaluates the company’s CR approach and performance.

    Stakeholders
To identify the CR-related aspects that are most relevant for TNT, an annual online survey is conducted with six stakeholder groups: customers, employees, subcontractors, suppliers, investors and civil society organisations. The survey outcome provides guidance for developing and improving our CR strategy and activities.

The 2014 survey was sent to approximately 4,000 stakeholders globally, with a response rate of 10%. The survey polled stakeholders on the CR-related aspects included in the Global Reporting Initiative 4 guidelines, which provide a framework for the information includes in the TNT Annual Report.. The stakeholders identified and prioritised the aspects they deemed most important for TNT. The sixteen highest ranking CR-related aspects are reflected in the Materiality Matrix.

    Reporting
TNT publishes an annual integrated report which combines the financial and non-financial information. The corporate responsibility information in the annual report is prepared in accordance with the reporting criteria and guidelines of the core application level of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4.

CR data is provided by the reporting entities and is gathered via a monitoring and reporting tool. TNT has engaged PwC to provide reasonable assurance on certain CR metrics and limited assurance on all other CR metrics. The assurance work is performed in accordance with the Assurance Standard 3410N as drawn up by the professional body of Dutch Accountants (NBA).

TNT is also a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact and therefore reports on the 10 principles regarding human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

  • Environment

TNT seeks to minimise any potential negative impact of its activities on the environment. Our objective is to reduce the consumption of energy and other natural resources as well as our emissions. This is pursued through a broad range of actions and initiatives, including network optimisation, energy efficiency programmes, carbon management, 'zero-emission' supply chain solutions for customers, and awareness and training programmes for employees and subcontractors.

    Environmental initiatives

  • Health & Safety

Maintaining a healthy and safe working environment is vital to our operations. We  invest in healthy and safe working conditions for employees, subcontractors and business partners. TNT's objective is to meet and, where possible, exceed all health and safety obligations. This is pursued by applying workplace, road safety and general health and safety best-practice processes and training programmes. A strong safety culture will help us to further reduce the number of accidents and incidents and realise our ambition of zero fatal accidents.

    Health & Safety initiatives

  • People

Driver behaviour has a major impact on safety on the road and on fuel consumption. Eco and defensive driving is included as a standard requirement in driving training courses in various locations and is also offered to subcontractors, where possible. TNT organises an annual driver engagement event called Drive Me Challenge, designed to motivate and award our best drivers for supporting our business in a sustainable way, every day. TNT’s top drivers and subcontractors from operating units worldwide compete in the event, showcasing their skills and expertise in fuel efficient driving techniques, safety and customer experience. This year’s Drive Me Challenge final will take place on 9 October 2015 at the Balocco Proving Ground near Turin, Italy.
